Isn't it audio or sound or something like this. Sorry, I don't have
a gnome machine handy. Start gnome-control-center from the
commandline and look for it. Did you installed gnome-audio?
dpkg -l | grep gnome-audio
> any audio daemon you mentioned in your last email.
What tells (from the console):
ps aux | grep pulse
ps aux | grep esound

No. And this isn't needed.
