I am also experiencing the same problem.

I have 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian SID) . 
An ICH9 Card,:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD 
Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03)

Alsamixer  has all volume above 80 , kernel module is loaded. aplay -l 
lists my card and i can play sound via headphone jack although my 
integrated speakers (DELL 1545 Laptop) Don't work.
