Well, the first attempt is to check wether user is in audio group:
$ id

Send the output of
$ lsmod | grep snd
$ cat /proc/asound/cards

We can only guess what's going on. Are there any status messages
when you run a audio app like
$ aplay mytest.wav
or alike?

Please notice that we don't maintain lenny packages. squeeze is on
the way and it should be the best to upgrade to ALSA 1.0.21 or
1.0.22, though.
