My Thinkpad T61's internal microphone will not capture sound, no
matter what I do to the various sliders and switches in alsamixer.
In particular, in the "Capture" screen I have 'capture' and 'capture 1'
both maxed out and with CAPTURE in red below them, both 'input source'
selectors set to 'internal mic', and 'internal mic boost' maxed out, and
the GNOME audio recorder application still records silence.

If I unmute the "Internal mic" slider in the "Playback" screen and raise it
a bit, there is a humming noise, which turns into a nasty feedback squeal at
about 50/100; however, the GNOME audio recorder still sees silence.

The presence or absence of the OSS compatibility modules in the running
kernel does not seem to make any difference.
