$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
# aptitude install alsa-base
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  alsa-base
$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

No hint of what to do in the error message or on the man page.

At least say "Check BIOS settings" or mention an FAQ (that mentions BIOS).
