I've been doing some experiments:

1) I installed a bare-bones system on a new partition:

     # debootstrap --arch=amd64 wheezy
     # aptitude install mercurial ca-certificates file etckeeper locales \
                        linux-image-amd64 firmware-linux-nonfree \
                        dibbler-client kbd console-setup apt-file mc
     # aptitude install alsa-base alsa-utils

and copied over /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-local.conf to get CK804 as
the default sound card. All tests were done as root.

Result: no sound, so I think we can conclude that it is a pure ALSA
and/or a kernel problem and not some interference with other
           packages.

2) I ran

     # strace aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav

on the Squeeze and Wheezy systems.

   The outputs are attached.
Hopefully the diff will give you an idea if this is really an alsa-base
issue or if the bug should be reassigned to the kernel.

Best regards,

  Peter
