The VIA 82C686A/B is card 0. Card 1 is the modem.
Nothing on the VIA is muted. The third "3D Contr" is shut off or
not implemented but that shouldn't stop all sound.

peter at dalton:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.5 (wheezy)
Release: 7.5
Codename: wheezy

Also there is a short tone at the early stage of machine startup,
from both the internal speaker and from a speaker connected to
the headphone socket. The BIOS must signal the sound hardware
and the sound hardware then produces sound.

Regards, ... Peter E.
