OK, thanks.  I'm causing trouble for you.  

Originally the vertical bars were grey which I interpreted 
as muted.  I raised the levels to show green bars which I 
interpreted as unmuted.  Apparently the level can be non-zero 
while the output is muted and the level can be 0 while the 
output is unmuted.  Both cases produce no sound.  Seems 
confusion prone.
