   * What led up to the situation?

First, i dont know if this ever worked, none of the older kernels still present on the system seems to be working.

The SPDIF output is not working on a ZOTAC HP67 motherboard. All other outputs are working, including HDMI.

Still no sound, not even light from the port.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

All the hardware parts (toslink cables, d/a converter, amplifier) was tested with another, working spdif output and was found working.
Tried to enable/disable various Azalia/digital outputs in the system BIOS.
Tried various snd_intel_hda parameters, including:
   model=generic
   model=auto
   model=realtek

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Still no sound.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

sound on the SPPDIF outout.
