Found where the "problem" is

# dpkg -L libasound2-plugins | grep 50-pulseaudio.conf
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/50-pulseaudio.conf
locally diverted to: /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.pulse/50-pulseaudio.conf
/etc/alsa/conf.d/50-pulseaudio.conf

# ls -lah /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.pulse/
total 12K
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4.0K Mar  8 18:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4.0K Mar  8 18:57 ..
-rw-r--r--  1 root root  242 Jan 26 17:17 50-pulseaudio.conf

# cp -v /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.pulse/50-pulseaudio.conf
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/
'/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.pulse/50-pulseaudio.conf' ->
'/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/50-pulseaudio.conf'

and voila, alsamixer now works. Is there a reason that the particular file
would have been diverted?
