That's great to hear you want to help! You were added to the pkg-ayatana
group on Alioth and free to do whatever you think is needed.

There is one problem with your plan though:
To enable gtk3 builds, we have to build with valac-0.12 instead of -0.10
and this currectly breaks gtk2 builds as per this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/622759, witing for the gtk maintainers to jump in
correctly ...
