With temporary files you mean files in the /var/lib/boinc-client/projects
and /var/lib/boinc-client/slots directories, right? The problem is that in
projects/<project_name>/ are not only files belonging to workunits, but also
the project's application(s). I would agree that the former is spooled data
while the latter is not.
One could also argue that the WU's result files in slots/ is variable state
information which should remain in /var/lib.
That being said, I think it's not feasible to strictly separate those files
into /var/lib and /var/spool and keeping the entire BOINC data directory
in /var/lib seems to be a good compromise for me.

Frank
