Copying files when BOINC is running

I have two PCs running hardy when I try to transfer a file over samba
between them I get somewhere around 300-400 KB/s when I turn off BOINC on
one of them it goes up to the 500-600 range.  Has anyone else experienced
this with BOINC before?
It could also be a hardware issue or a maybe even a kernel regression, I
suppose.
