Public bug reported:

We already had a bug opened for this issue. But it was marked as "fix
released" (I don't know why as no change ever happened to the repository
package)

The Boinc package (7.0.24....precise1) in the 12.04 Ubuntu repository doesn't work for seti at home, it just produces "computation errors".
We know this issue and the ones still existing are specific to Debian/Ubuntu packages, manual installs of Boinc from Berkeley's website (7.0.25 AND 7.0.28) do not have ANY of these issues.

Locutus' "Boinc development" PPA offers a fix for the instant
computation error bug. However there are still many people having issues
running seti at home, even with the PPA package (which is based on
Steffen's GIT). Mainly errors like this:

<core_client_version>7.0.28</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process got signal 11
</message>
<stderr_txt>

</stderr_txt>
]]>

OR

<core_client_version>7.0.28</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome_enhanced: error while loading shared libraries: libboinc_api.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

</stderr_txt>
]]>

OR

error while loading shared libraries: libboinc_api.so.6: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

User comment:" I have in /usr/lib libboinc_api.so, libboinc_api.so.7 and
libboinc_api.7.0.27 the former two are links to the latter."

So currently, many casual seti at home users are still unable to run Boinc.
Both with the standard package (of course, as it's still the "broken"
package), AND with the current development package in Locutus' PPA.

As I cannot recreate these issues other users are having I haven't been
able to help figure anything out.

I only hope that someone with some Linux skills will figure out what the
issue(s) are and report something usable to me, or here to you guys.

Because right now, seti at home with Boinc is a no-go for a lot of casual
Ubuntu users. I have given up on trying to point them to the PPA, as I
still get too many coming back complaining of errors, and complaining
about Ubuntu having these errors. I now just tell them to download the
package directly from Boinc, because it doesn't have these issues....
