Ok after some digging around I found a workaround.

if you run boincmgr as root it doesn't crash.

step to reproduce
login as root
cd /var/lib/boinc-client/slots/0
cat graphics_app 
<soft_link>../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome_graphics</soft_link>

../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome_graphics

works as expected.

strace shows a failure in open "boinc_setiathome_0" because "slot" dir has boinc:boinc as ownership and the user account is not in the boinc group.

Suggestions for a fix? I don't really know how to fix this.
