Yes, I agree it's useful and good to keep a version in experimental.

I vaguely remember that the "-static" flags were kept, because of some
build failure when they were removed. But that was back in 2012, and
certainly gcc has changed. (although I don't see any connection
between "-static" and undefined symbols...)

These patches appear to be fine. (and anyway we can fix them if there's
any problems.) My only minor suggestion is that it's better to separate
two (seemingly) unrelated patches into two commits.
