Just echoing my sentiments from the github pull request that is the
source of a patch in 7.6.21+dfsg-1 :
Edit: @LocutusOfBorg - Howdy again. I'd recommend pulling in my latest
commit/patch on the branch in this PR to unstable. It follows
@JuhaSointusalo's less-interrupting approach in that, if connection to
the X-server fails, we effectively fall back to the other idle
detection schemes (rather than always say that the machine is busy).
The current code from the patch in 7.6.21+dfsg-1 is likely to cause
BOINC to always think the machine is active, as I wasn't testing
running my patched boinc as the "boinc" user. Running as the boinc
user, boinc will likely be unable to open the xdisplay without
something like "xhost +SI:localuser:boinc" being run by the local user
who owns the X session. The updated patch (also attached here) instead
simply disregards xss idle detection if any such error is run into
(also logging the failure to the Event Log).
