Attempting to run boinc from package manager or direct download from
boinc.berkeley.edu fails.

System:
Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit
Cinnamon v. 3.0.7
Kernel 4.4.0-59-generic
Processor: Intel Core i5-2400
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 690

Using the downloaded self-extracting file, and following the
instructions produces an error.

./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2u_html-2.8.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
