I've created a new branch targetted at this upload, which can be viewed

Can someone give it a once over and make sure I haven't forgotten any of
the upstream patches (particularly for the fd leak issues - there were a
lot scattered around the tree).

If it looks OK to everyone, I'm willing to upload, or Steffen can if he
doesn't want to wait for me to do it.
