Subject: git layout

Could someone please enlighten me about out git layout? I have commited
some changes to debian/unstable as we don't use dpatch/quilt/whatever anymore.
But I wonder if that's the right place.  Master seems to be quite old a
version.  What is this used for? Or can/shall we remove it?
