I have only seen this on 32-bit architectures before (previously i686
but not in recent times, now only armhf). I have never seen this happen
on amd64 on any of my build machines or the Debian buildds.

I have a suspicion (given the stacktrace) that the issue is somewhere
inside org.clojure/data.xml rather than lein itself. Leiningen is pinned
to an old version, but there hasn't been a stable release since that one
(latest is 0.2.0-alpha5).

I definitely need help reproducing this and tracking down a root cause.
FWIW I filed an upstream bug about this a while back as well:
https://github.com/technomancy/leiningen/issues/2458

I've been aware of this at least March 2018 but am at a loss for what
could be causing it.

Cheers!
