Would it also be acceptable to have a small d/rules snippet? In that

override_dh_auto_configure:
	dh_auto_configure --buildsystem=cmake -- \
	-DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5

will most likely be sufficient. There is a small chance that the build 
relies on deprecated behavior and will still fail with this override. If 
that is the case, I'll help you diagnose the issue and come up with a 
more in-depth fix.
