He has placed much of his code in the public domain though, and he has
written (on his website at http://cr.yp.to/publicdomain.html ) a pretty
convincing rebuttal of the assertion that that cannot be done.

I think that it cannot hurt to ask him whether he'd be willing to
solver our problem by doing the same for ftpparse.

That's not good enough from the perspective of Debian though.
