My apologies for the delay in responding to the original message.

Completely disabling IPO/LTO seems somewhat heavy-handed. For whatever
reason, upstream is intent on keeping IPO/LTO, but still seems open to
the possibility of adding a CMake option that would allow it to be
disabled selectively. I'd like to see if we can submit a PR upstream to
make that option one that can be disabled.

Another option is to make the Bastian's patch apply only when the build
is being executed on or for a mips64el target. However, when I asked
about this on IRC, the responses were generally along the lines of, "you
could do that, but it is better if the sources are the same on all
platforms and that the options be controlled in the configure step." I
can see the logic in that.

Since we already have 3.0 in sid and there is not a release imminent,
could we hold off until we have an option that we can toggle at
configure time? I can get to it in a week or two, if nobody else gets
to it first.

Regards,

-Roberto
