I know, and the SVN version of cryptsetup already supports it. I've been 
using it this week to boot :) In addition, I've also written a usplash 
theme package which is also about to be uploaded. So shortly (i.e. when 
a new cryptsetup and the usplash theme enters the archive) this will 
just work automagically.

Feel free to build and test the SVN version if you want to (it's on 
svn.debian.org).

PS. echo is a builtin function in both the klibc and busybox shell so 
adding it with a hook is not necessary...
