I think the justification probably involves ease of visual
indentification of the sentence structure. I think this happens
automatically with generated document presentation media
(manpages/HTML/TeX/...) (where it's also been advised to start
sentences on new lines for most-readable VCS diffs). For a README
file though, you can manually include double spaces.
