Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.7.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #784881

The warning is now doubled:

cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda2
cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab

On this system /dev/sda2 is a btrfs filesystem mounted on / using its UUID.
(For the record, /dev/sda1 if the EFI vfat partition.)
The /etc/crypttab file is empty

I can always reproduce this, for example:

~# dpkg-reconfigure cryptsetup
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
update-rc.d: warning: start and stop actions are no longer supported; falling back to defaults
update-rc.d: warning: start and stop actions are no longer supported; falling back to defaults
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.125) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.7.0-1-amd64
cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda2
cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab
