I can still help with the debugging :-) AFAICT the “Error: Timeout
reached while waiting for askpass.” condition is reached iff. the script
didn't find a running ‘/lib/cryptsetup/askpass’ process with a file
descriptor opened to ‘/lib/cryptsetup/passfifo’ (it'll keep trying for
10s then give up with that error message).

The ‘cryptsetup’ binary is out of the picture at that point, so I fail
to see how the ‘cryptsetup-nuke-keys’ patch from Kali can have any
effect here. You should even get passed the timeout if you run askpass
standalone, for instance as `/lib/cryptsetup/askpass foo`.

Did you try to enable xtrace for ‘cryptroot-unlock’, like I suggested in
Message #28, like I suggested in https://bugs.debian.org/931710#28 ?
Might help figuring out what's going on.
