Thanks for your report! It was well written, and included all the
necessary information. It is exactly what we want -- upgrade testing
from the sarge version! :)

You're absolutely right. The option is not required, and has a
compiled-in default, which is reflected in the default value suggested
in the new defaults file. So the init script should handle the case
where THREADS is unset.
A fix has been committed and will be included in the next version, due
in no more than 48 hours.
