Status of transition to newer db version?

Can anyone intelligently speak to where we are with respect to being
able to update to a newer version of berkeley db?  The way I see it, we
have these options:

 - wait for upstream to declare compatibility with a new version
 - do enough testing/auditing ourselves to "guarantee" compatibility

Please feel free to add to the list.
