Karsten replied to me off list and informed that he thought his machine
was secure.  I have renewed my request to him for the contents of the
above files.  So far, it is my estimation that the behavior he has
experienced is the result of a misconfiguration.  If we see something to
the contrary, then I think there might be cause for the security team
get involved.  If not, then I think there is nothing of concern for the
moment.
