Four and a half days later, I can confirm that the problem wasn't
solved with the s/compat/files/ workaround:

USER       PID %CPU %MEM   VSZ  RSS TTY      STAT START   TIME COMMAND
root     25196  0.0  0.5 77940 1104 ?        S    May17   0:22
/usr/sbin/saslauthd -a pam

saslauthd is already 77+Mb in size.

If you want, I can try reverting the nsswitch change to test how much
it grows without it.
