My /etc/postfix/master.cf says:
smtp   inet   n - n - - smtpd
-> it is NOT chrooted.
Maybe this is because the basic installation was woody and upgraded 
later to lenny.

Therefore path in /etc/default/saslauthd is not like your README and the 
comments in /etc/default/saslauthd says 
(/var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd) but just /var/run/saslauthd

Improve the documentation to describe setup also for non-chrooted
Postfix.
