That would help.  I have been quite busy and don't have as much time as
I would like to devote to some of my Debian packages.

Certainly, we need help with some of the older outstanding bugs, and
possibly also with trying to get upstream to merge some of the patches
that we carry.

I did, but I was also going to implement a fix for #618885 and include
that in the upload.  But I have not had time.

I was previously strongly in favor of keeping subversion, but as more of
my projects have gone over to git I have become more comfortable with
it.  I am not specifically inclined to convert the repository, but if
you want to do the conversion, I can start working with a git repository
for this package.  Were you planning on using the Git service on Alioth?
