This is a side-effect of freetype autohinting. See the details at:

ftgrid is in freetype2-demos, if you want to try the experiment there.
Upstream E devs do not consider it a bug. The first hit on enlightenment-users
for "terminology underscore" might look familiar:

Best solution is to use a different font. Inconsolata from fonts-inconsolata
and IBM Plex Mono from fonts-ibm-plex have both been better for me. Fixes
fonts like terminus should also help.
