thanks for investigating.
figured this out. i had to reset the upstream branch to the tarball..
the package erroneously started on top of upstream.

i have uploaded the tarball here [1] but couldn't make uscan find it.
let me know if there is an obvious way, but my intent is to move away
from github (suggestions welcome).

> sudo cowbuilder --create --distribution sid

very useful. cowbuilder is happy now after adding another build
dependency.
