as I understand reducing the size of the package is a desireable thing I
wont start to put any energy on making this work inside Debian without
support from upstream.
In my eyes this is clearly an issue that upstream need to solve.

So you tagged this report correctly as wishlist.

We could add an upstream issue to this report so the BTS could track the
upstream status and we would get a notice if upstream has fixed
(hopefully) the upstream bug report.

As I'm not following the upstream issue tracking I'm not sure if your
first URL would be the correct upstream issue to track.
