Yes, I'm thinking exactly the same thing.  I wonder if it has something
to do with casts, but who knows...

That produced no results.  It seems that the strace didn't follow the
fork.  Hmm....

When I ran it with -ff, it produced a zero-byte file for the client.
I'm not sure what is going on there.  I'm going to investigate some more
and get back to you.
