hostname --fqdn should return the fully qualified host name (FQDN),
not the unqualified hostname. There is something wrong on your box.

That's what I meant.
However, this output is not conclusive since rewriting seems to work
ok, but not when sending an actual e-mail.
Can you please send the output of
echo -e "From: kromagg@localhost\nTo: kromagg@gmail.com\nSubject: test\n\ntest" | exim -d -f kromagg@localhost kromagg@gmail.com
