Package: exim4-base
Version: 4.30-3
Severity: important

Perhaps the postinst should query exim for its config, esp. the
spooldir, as I still use /var/spool/exim for exim4. After upgrading, I
was no longer able to receive any email.

At the least, check that /var/spool/exim4 exists, and fail if it
doesn't.

What's the point of this "Debian-exim" anyway? I can't find _any_
reasoning / explanation in the changelog.

It also breaks interoperability with MailScanner, as after manually
fixing the ownerships of my spooldirs, I now get errors from
MailScanner:

Jan 8 12:59:07 wurtel MailScanner[29564]: Cannot cd to dir /var/spool/exim.in/input to read messages, Permission denied

I had to change the run as definition for MailScanner by hand, I had no
warning. Another drawback of the "Debian-exim" thing instead of plain
"mail".

And this isn't very helpful, in NEWS.Debian.gz:

        - Hack: make Debian-exim a group with gid=8, i.e. an alias for
the mail group, _before_ you make the upgrade. (groupadd -o -g 8
          Debian-exim)

You can only read this AFTER upgrading.
I suggest that this change should be preceded by a big fat debconf
warning, before proceeding with the upgrade.

It's almost enough to drive one to postfix...

Paul Slootman,
not happy
