Dear exim maintainers,
Thanks for the work you do. This message may no longer be relevant
because I see that there have been new versions of exim-config in
unstable which seem to address documentation for systems using the
"smarthost" option. However, I thought I'd forward a small thing that
kept me stuck for several days as I tried to configure exim.
My goal was to configure my system to use a smarthost for sending mail.
Although my machine has an address that looks like mymachine.truman.edu,
I wanted my e-mail to look like it came from just thatcher@truman.edu.
I now know that I should set my "mail name" to be
thatcher@mymachine.truman.edu and later use rewriting so that my e-mail
address is sent on as thatcher@truman.edu
However, when I read the DebConf instructions for setting the mail name,
the following passage really threw me off:
This name will be also be used by other programs; it should be the
single, full domain name (FQDN) from which mail will appear to
originate.
Specifically, the word "appear" confused me. I thought I was being asked
where I wanted my e-mail to look like it was from, to which I answered
just "truman.edu." This caused all my mail to other people with a
truman.edu address to be treated as if it were mail local to my machine,
and consequently not be delivered. Since the non-delivery was silent, I
didn't even realize that for the space of a week, none of my e-mail was
getting through.
I don't know whether the following wording is actually better or
correct, but I know it would have led me to answer the right thing when
asked. Here's my suggested wording for the "mail name" prompt:
This name will also be used by other programs; it should be the
single, full domain name (FQDN) of the actual machine on which your
mail originates. If you want your mail to appear to originate from
another address, you may enable rewritting later in this set-up.
It's quite likely that my confusion was my own fault---I tried to do
an internet search for this problem, but I didn't find any postings that
were unambiguous to me---but I hope this suggestion is helpful.
Best Regards,
Scott Thatcher

This bug is fixed in 4.43-3, the respective changelog says:
* make nullmailer setup and the way we use mailname a lot more sensible,
attacking #244095 and #280207:
- mailname is not implicitely made a local domain, instead it is listed
explicitely in dc_other_hostnames, where users can easily remove it
from. (This is basically what postfix does, too.) When upgrading
existing installations mailname is automatically added _once_ to
dc_other_hostnames, on fresh installations mailname is the default
value of dc_other_hostnames. We store the fact that we have added
mailname to dc_other_hostnames in $dc_mailname_in_oh in
update-exim4.conf.conf.
- Make exim work correctly if dc_readhost ("visible, rewritten domain name
for local users") ends up as part of local_domain, which happens if
the same value is chosen for mailname and dc_readhost. This
implemented by new router, hub_user_smarthost. Previously users were
required to use something different (my.invalid.domain) for mailname.
- Special thanks to Christian Perrier for taking care of the
template translation updates.
