It seems that the problem is in procmail side, since from what I
understand, when procmail fails to apply any rule to the email message,
then it store the message in /var/mail/username.

Indeed I changed all rules as explained
in /usr/share/doc/procmail/README.Maildir and if the message match a
rule then it is correctly stored, while if it doesn't match then it is
dropped in the wrong place (/var/mail).

A quick solution, that should be added to the README, is that a catchall
rule may be added as last rule in .procmailrc.
