We're open to suggestions how to simplify initial configuration.

Ouch, shouldn't be that way. Found stupid bug in update-exim4.conf.
Fixed in svn.

Choosing configtype none gives you a pretty explicit debconf note
saying that you exim will be unuseable. Which is exactly what you got.

It does if you want it to work. If you want to shoot yourself in the
foot, use the equivs package to build your own pseudopackage which
will satisfy MTA dependencies.

I am keeping this bug open because I would like to inquire from my
collegues whether it is a feature that conftype none always uses the
split config.

Please state what you would like to have changed in the exim 4
packages to have your wishes satisfied.
