Package: exim4-daemon-light
Version: 4.22-5
Severity: normal

While configuration of SMTP authentication to a smarthost is a great
deal easier than in exim3 (using /etc/exim4/passwd.client), it is a lot
more troublesome.

I have exim4 running as a daemon, i.e. not from inetd. If I send a
message, e.g. from mutt, gnus or Evolution while the network is
unreachable, exim 3 did simply defer delivery and retry later.

If the network becomes reachable, (i.e. our router dials out to our ISP)
while exim4 is in the process of trying to deliver a message to the
smarthost, it somehow fails to authenticate itself which results in a
delivery error.

If I send the message while the network is reachable, it works just
fine.

This is 100% reproducible.

I guess I would have to intercept the full SMTP dialogue between exim
and the smarthost to find out what is actually going on. However, I'm
not sure how to do that.

Thanks,

Johannes

Doing so. If new knowledge arises, please open a new bug or report on
the pkg-exim4-users mailing list.
