Package: exim4
Version: 4.50-6
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I just realized today that after the May 26th or 27th testing upgrade to
version 4.50-6, none of my outgoing mail has been sent via my SSL and
AUTH-enabled smarthost (using /etc/exim4/passwd.client). I had not had
a problem for several months with exim4 as an auth ssl client.

My smtp server responds with:

2005-05-29 15:49:53 1DcUjI-0006US-Ds ** foo@bar.com R=smarthost T=remote_smtp_smarthost: SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM:<matt@act> SIZE=1338: host smtp.umn.edu [160.94.23.48]: 530 5.0.0 Must issue an AUTH command first

I can submit fine using sylpheed's builtin MTA.

I don't know if it is related, but I was not receiving delivery failure
notices either after the upgrade since exim began attempting to send
them via the smarthost. Adding my hostname to "dc_other_hostnames" below
fixed this problem.

"Both exim4-daemon-heavy and exim4-daemon-light support TLS/SSL using the
GnuTLS library and exim will use TLS *automatically* as client if the
server exim connects to offers it."

Allow me one final description of the issue.

 - I used to use exim4 as a client to send mail to an SSL-only SMTP
   server requiring authentication.

 - I did this by first running debconf and choosing "mail sent by
smarthost; received via SMTP or fetchmail". The instructions told me
to customize /etc/exim4/passwd.client. I did so.

 - Everything worked fine for several months.

 - Something in the past 10 days something changed. I assume the testing
exim4 package was updated. Now despite following the same procedure,
   I cannot send mail.

I am closing this as you are confident this is a problem with my system
and I don't know what further information I can offer.
