Well... It appeared to be my own mistake...

In my /etc/hosts I had localhost first and the machine name second. As a 
result "hostname --fqdn" was returning
localhost instead of the name of the machine which in turn resulted in 
'smarthost' router being used instead of
'local_user'.

I haven't completely figured out how the wrong router got used since 
DC_visiblename is my machine name in
both cases but change of the name order in /etc/hosts so that "hostname 
--fqdn" returns the right result does
fix the problem for me.
