Configuration file is /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated
# /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf
#
# Edit this file and /etc/mailname by hand and execute update-exim4.conf
# yourself or use 'dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config'
#
# Please note that this is _not_ a dpkg-conffile and that automatic changes
# to this file might happen. The code handling this will honor your local
# changes, so this is usually fine, but will break local schemes that mess
# around with multiple versions of the file.
#
# update-exim4.conf uses this file to determine variable values to replace
# the DEBCONFsomethingDEBCONF strings in the configuration template files.
#
# Most settings found in here do have corresponding questions in the
# Debconf configuration, but not all of them.
#
# This is a Debian specific file

The default configuration when using dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
results in no mail being delivered to root in Etch. Worked fine in
Sarge. My etc/aliases file is identical in Etch to that in Sarge. I
have Etch installed on two machines and am unable to get root mail. If
I send a mail message to root using 'mail root' as a command, the
message gets sent to my ISP. It then is returned with an error message
because root at charter.net is not identifiable, but my email address,
which exim4 inserted into the 'From' field is identifiable. I assume,
but am not sure that the root mail from apcupsd is also sent to my ISP
where it dies since the 'From' field is not identifiable. I can't find
a difference between the Sarge and Etch exim4 config files to account
for this. Disabling the rewrite of addresses does not stop this
problem, only removes my email address from the 'From' field so the ISP
doesn't know where it came from and can't complain.

Richard
