I am not sure whether it is a good idea to add detection code for
every possible kind of breakage which might occur when running exim4
on Debian.

I don't think so as this might be opening a can of worms.

Anyway, this IMO would belong into update-exim4.conf, post-etch. If we
were willing to address this breakage.
