(a) Submitter has fixed the e-mail configuation issue on his side.
Setting back submitter mail address

(b) It is necessary to invoke debian/rules pack-configs if one wants
to use dpkg-buildpackage. dpkg-buildpackage does a clean before build
and thus zaps the changes to the unpacked configuration.

(c) The debian/rules documentation was updated accordingly in svn.

(d) While debugging, bug #386188 in patch(1) was discovered and reported
