I have the same setup here:
$ host 85.214.68.41
41.68.214.85.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer torres.zugschlus.de.
$ host torres.zugschlus.de
torres.zugschlus.de has address 85.214.68.41
$ host 85.214.68.41
41.68.214.85.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer torres.zugschlus.de.

Right, that is still necessary.

That is not necessary. I cannot reproduce your issue on my system; as
long as torres.zugschlus.de is listed in passwd.client, my exim
(4.67-8 from unstable) authenticates just fine regardless whether my
smarthost is set to mailgate.zugschlus.de or torres.zugschlus.de.

That being said, I feel that it would be useful to have this
discussion in a researchable medium, such as pkg-exim4-users or in a
Debian bug report.

Greetings
